How Swells Effect Santa Cruz Surfing?

Capitola JettyThe best summer swells for Santa Cruz surfing are generated by storms in the southern hemisphere. These powerful winter southern hemisphere storms push swells our direction during our summer season. We were fortunate so far this summer to be on the receiving end of 2 major swells that were generated off the coast of New Zealand. These swells travel thousands of miles before reaching Santa Cruz surfing breaks and the reefs surrounding Capitola Beach. Capitola Beach and the reefs surrounding the area come alive with good southerly swells. The best summer southerly swell direction for Capitola is between 190– 220 degrees.
